Sketchbook

I finally got around to scanning some of my crowded sketchbook pages. Most of these were drawn straight into ink, on public transport. They're really a personal reference library for me, and I've found them invaluable lately with my inking. I'd recommend everyone do the same- using their sketchbook not just as a doodle-pad, but a resource for thinks that you like, or suck at drawing.

I really like the balance of black & white, very minimalist yet not. I love the horse + rider statue in the bottom most page in particular. That page's inking vaguely reminds me of Mustashrik's ink work.

this stuff is -just- georgeous, i srsly am in love with your style of drawing every time i see it *laugh*! XD seriously full of life, so much expression and uuh like heart? or something i can't explain it- your linework is fabulous. i love those little story boards as well, and the figures you draw from life i like how you've focused on the gestures? but man it's really nice to see drawings full of life and, as you said, a sketchbook that isn't just scribbles!! It's always been a personal beleif that a sketchbook should be full and almost unhealthy internal, it really helps to develop your thoughts and drawings, this really reminds me of seth's sketchbooks or chris ware's sketchbooks, if you don't know them do check them out!

sorry to ramble! I had no idea this blog existed either, so this is cool. //sarah

Cheers Faye, B&W balance is something i'm really interested in at the moment, esp in a full scene with both background and foreground.

Thanks Sarah! Annoyingly, In the gestural "power of heart" regard, these are some of the best drawings i've done. Whenever I try to translate that to my comic pages I fail miserably and they become all tight and lifeless. I'm working on it.

I think thats part of that elusive something I'm struggling for in my inking. The perfect combination of neat + loose lively + detail + minimalism + black & white balance. HARD!

The only "downside" (if it even is one) to that style of inking that I can think of is that your characters are permanently acting in a world of chiaroscuro, where intense sunlight/ stage lights abound. XD

Gorgeous as always! God knows why don't get on with your own art, I mean it's good to be critical and all but you should cut yourself some slack from time to time! :)

o_o just amazing, as ever! Really inspiring stuff! Particularly those little scenes. I've been wasting my train journeys on design magazines, I can never remember anyone's name anyway...
